Before you can book your practical driving test, you must pass the Theory Test. It's designed to ensure you have a solid understanding of the rules of the road and can spot hazards safely.
Where do I book it?
You should ONLY book your theory test through the official GOV.UK website. Do not use third-party websites as they often charge hidden admin fees!
What does it cost?
The official cost of a car theory test is £23.
What do I need to book?
You will need your provisional UK driving licence number, a valid email address, and a debit or credit card.
The theory test is taken at an official DVSA test centre on a computer. It consists of two parts, and you must pass BOTH parts in the same sitting to get your certificate.
You have 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions based on the Highway Code, traffic signs, and driving skills. You must score at least 43 out of 50 to pass.
Immediately after the multiple-choice section, you will watch 14 video clips featuring everyday road scenes. Your job is to click the mouse as soon as you spot a developing hazard. One clip will contain TWO hazards. You must score at least 44 out of 75 to pass.
Don't just guess! The theory test requires genuine studying. We highly recommend using official DVSA resources or top-rated apps.
The Highway Code: It is essential reading. You can read it online for free on GOV.UK or buy a physical copy. Understanding the rules (not just memorizing answers) will make your practical lessons much easier.
